Points To Consider When Picking The Perfect Puppy – Part One

Whenever you decide to buy a puppy it is essential that the puppy you want has the personality that suits you and your family and that you can cater for all its needs.

Level Of Protectiveness
If you are looking for a dog that can physically protect your home and family then ideally it would have the physical attributes to strike fear into any intruder. Think about getting a large heavily set breed. We’re talking the likes of German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers here. These dogs are protective of their owners and their environment with the added bonus of looking fearsome to burglars. They are also highly skilled and easily trainable. For most dog owners, a dog barking when someone approaches the door is sufficient to give them a sense of security; it’s like having your own living home alarm system. The bark of a small dog is just as effective in dissuading the would be burgler, as the bark of a large hound would be. Terriers and most toy breeds are excellent watchdogs as their naturally cautious natures mean they’re always on the “look out”.

Dogs and Children
Whatever type of puppy you decide to bring home, remember that looking after a young puppy takes a similar amount of time and commitment that a young child does, sometimes even more. When you have both young children and a young puppy in the same house you need to be extra vigilant. Keeping an eye on all parties at all times is essential to prevent any accidents between them that could lead to injury for either one. It is generally accepted that if the house contains toddlers it is best to avoid picking any of the Toy Breeds as they are very susceptible to being squeezed too hard unknowingly by the little child whilst playing.

Time
One reason dogs are so popular is because in general they love to spend time with people, especially their “family”. So if you can’t spend the required time with your pet and intend leaving him alone all day the you might want to think again. Puppies especially need regular attention and training if they are to become an integral part of the family. If you need, because of work etc. to leave your dog alone for long periods of the day then it would be better to choose a dog that is more able to adapt such as Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes or Terriers. Just make sure they have enough room to roam and have access to food and water.
