I’m in the middle of writing a book about training a puppy but I thought I’d share with you an article about the reasons why it’s good to continue training your dog when it’s an adult. I hope you enjoy it and, as usual, any comments are very welcome.

Adult Dog Training – What To Expect From Your Dog As He Reaches His Adult Years

Your dog has finally reached his adulthood and this means that the period of training, adjusting, socializing, and more training have come to a stopping point (for the most part, that is).

This is the period where you can really appreciate his companionship, his friendship, and even his help around the house (depending on his level of training). The point is, is you don’t have to babysit him anymore. It is the stage in your dog’s life where he can walk alongside you off leash, sit and watch you wash your car, maybe even hold the hose for you, or just sit quietly with you in in the backyard while you read a book.

However, training should not stop just because your dog has reached adulthood. A good formula for keeping your dog’s body healthy and his mind sharp throughout his adult years is to have 3 training sessions a week. The training does not have to be laborious, nor does it have to take long.  All it takes is about 10 to 15 minutes per session, and training can be about practicing and/or improving skills that he has already learned.

There are several benefits to continue training your adult dog on a regular basis:

1. Regular training keeps his mind alert and active.

2. It keeps his body strong and in shape.

3. It serves as refresher courses to different commands and tricks that he had already acquired.

4. It keeps him aware of the rules that you have enforced for him.

5. It prevents boredom.

6. It develops great team work between you and him.

7. And best of all, it will deepen the bond that the two of you have together. If he remains active throughout the whole aspect of his life (physical, mental, social), then he will continue to play an active role in your life, be a team player, and be able to share wonderful times together.

Physical Needs Of An Adult Dog

The physical needs of your dog peaks during his developmental adolescent stage. But once he passes the adolescent stage and reaches adulthood, his physical needs will arrive at a period where there will be no significant change to the amount of exercise that his body needs to stay healthy.

As an adult dog, the amount of exercise that his body requires will depend on his size, breed, and personality type. Continue with the regular walks and occasional runs. A game of ball should also be on your list, as well as swimming if your dog likes being in the water. If you have a large and/or energetic dog, you may have to do more than those listed above. If you have a small and/or less active dog, you will still need to give him exercise. You just have to tame it down, depending on his level of endurance.

Teaching your puppy the “leave it” and “drop it”commands can keep your youngster from doing something dangerous, such as eating mouse poison, rotten food and other yucky stuff, or running into the path of a speeding car.

“Leave It”

With your puppy on a leash, walk by a tempting item, such as food or a toy (you can pre-place items for this exercise). When your puppy tries to pick up the item, give a short quick tug on the leash and say, “Leave it.”

Enthusiastically praise your puppy for obeying (“Good Sparky!”). You can offer a treat reward at this time if you prefer, but praise and a pat on the head work just as well. Repeat this routine at home.

Here’s another method you can use to teach your puppy the leave it command: Hold a food treat in your closed fist. When your puppy noses your hand, say “Leave it,” and keep your fist closed. When your pup stops nosing your hand, reward with praise, then give a verbal release command (such as “okay”) and let your puppy have the treat. Continue working like this until your puppy will sit quietly without touching a nearby treat until you give the release command.

“Drop It”

When your puppy picks up a forbidden object, say, “Drop it!” and walk over to your puppy. If your pup won’t release the item, offer it a tempting treat as a trade for the item. When your puppy drops it, offer praise and a safe substitute – preferably one that’s more enticing than the forbidden item.

If your puppy runs away from you, don’t chase it – it’ll think you’re playing a game. Instead, ignore your little one and get yourself a treat from the kitchen (something you know your puppy likes). Take the treat to a puppy-accessible area and start to eat it (or pretend to eat it, if it’s a dog goodie).

Be dramatic about how yummy it is. Call your puppy over, then give the drop it command and trade the treat for the forbidden item. (Be sure to praise your youngster for obeying.) After your puppy finishes the treat, offer an acceptable toy.

This time it’s the turn of the Bichon Frise which I have a particular fondness for as one of my favourite customers has one named Alfie and he looks fabulous in his new raincoat.

The Bichon Frise dog breed is a member of the non-sporting group and its roots are originally from the Mediterranean. This dog breed came the United States sometime around the 1950s but did not become popular with dog owners until the mid 1960s. And it was not until the year 1971 that the AKC (American Kennel Club) recognized the Bichon Frise as an official breed.

These cute animals are considered to be bouncy, playful, and extremely perky with character. Some dog enthusiasts say that the Bichon Frise manages a happy-go-lucky outlook towards life. These dogs are so friendly that strangers can come up to them and pet the dogs with no worry of aggression. And suffice to say, the Bichon Frise gets along very well with young children.

This dog is very responsive, affectionate, and adores cuddling with its family. Because of its need for human companionship, the Bichon Frise cannot be left alone for too long a time. He will become easily upset and bark until company arrives.

Upkeep And Maintenance

Even though they are small, the Bichon Frise does need a bit of daily exercise. A simple walk on the leash, a few laps in the yard, or even rigorous indoor games will work just fine. If you have access to an enclosed backyard or perhaps a field, a great way to exercise these little guys is to have one of its owners stand on one side the grass, and a second owner at the far distance of the other side. Each of you will take turns calling your dog as you watch him run vigorously back-and-forth until he is easily tired.

When it comes to grooming, you will need to brush the Bichon Frise about every other day. This dog breed has a white puffy coat that may need trimming and scissoring on an occasional basis. And although the Bichon Frise does not shed, some hairs do become loose and could entangle with the rest of the coat, causing it to mat.

Health Information

Like most small dogs, you can look forward to the Bichon Frise with having a lifespan of up to 15 or more years. Veterinarians suggest that you have this breed specifically tested for eye problems, knee dysplasia, and hip dysplasia. Major health problems that seem to stem through a majority of Bichon Frise dogs are allergies, Cushing’s disease, and patellar luxation.

For anyone lucky enough to own a Chihuahua or other small breed the world of designer dog clothes is a portal to a fashion wonderland. Pet clothing has never been more fashionable and more en vogue than it is right now. The Chihuahua owner and owners of other small breeds have the comfort of knowing that their little pals will not only be able to be kept warm and dry but they will look fabulous.
Because of their tiny dimensions, toy breeds look simply gorgeous wearing funky t-shirts or that designer dog coat. Is there anything cuter or more adorable than a Chihuahua’s little face peering out from under a little warm woollen hat?

Dressing your Chihuahua – fun and functional.
Because Chihuahuas originated in the warm climes of Mexico they have evolved to cope with very hot conditions. The ears, for example, are disproportionately large in order to dissipate heat. In cold conditions Chihuahuas lose a huge amount of body heat through their ears if not protected will soon feel the cold and begin shivering. This is where items such as hoodies, hats and scarves come in to play. Other Toy Breeds need protection from the cold simply because of their smaller body mass and really appreciate a warm dog coat or jumper.

The array of designer dog clothes available is mind-blowing. Everything is available from urban hip hoodies through designer t-shirts to knitted sweaters. From the cutest hats and scarves to faux fur-lined fleece lined parkas for those chilly winter days. How about a bright raincoat for those grey days, yep, you can get those too. For the really special occasion there are diamante encrusted dresses or for the ultimate day out there are wedding dresses complete with tiaras for the girls and tuxedo themed outfits for the little guys. For the night time rather than an old blanket that’s continually slipping off why not treat your dog to some toasty pyjamas?

Choosing The Right Fit
As with human clothing Size labels will vary from one company to the next. If your dog is “in-between” sizes always go for the larger size. It is far better for dog clothing to be slightly too large rather than slightly too small.
To accurately size your dog take the following measurements:
1) Circumference of the neck
2) Circumference of the chest
3) Length of the back from middle of neck to base of the tail.
The garment should not hamper the dog’s movement.. Remember wearing designer dog clothes should be fun for both you and your dog
